The Annual Summer Concert by
Tamio Shiraishi & Sean Meehan
and Record release celebration.
Saturday July 29, 7pm, West Cannon Battery of Fort Tilden in Queens NYC, Rain or Stars
After the concert please stay for watermelon and refreshments and help us celebrate the release of Annual Summer Concerts, a recording of two previous summers: July 2002 under the Manhattan Bridge & July 2003 in the municipal parking garage at the 79th St. Boat Basin. The 12” vinyl record is a co-production of GD Stereo and Old Gold Records. The record will be available for a special low price.
In 1922, two cannons were installed at Ft. Tilden on the RockawayPenninsula to protect New York Harbor. Just before WWII concrete bunkers were built around the guns to protect them from air attacks and also limit their radius so if they were captured they could not be turned towards Manhattan.
The guns are gone but the bunkers remain as part of Gateway National park on what is now Jacob Riis Beach. Join us in or around the western most bunker (Battery Harris) for a concert.
By Public Transportation take the #2 train to Flatbush Avenue. Take Q35 bus to the park from infront of the payless shoe store. After crossing the Marine Park bridge, ask driver to let you off at either Ft. Tilden or Riis Beach.
(About 90 min from midtown)
Via Car take the Belt Parkway to Exit 11S, then Flatbush Avenue south across the Marine Parkway Bridge to the park. It is best to park in the Riis Beach parking lot and walk to the Harris Battery at Ft Tilden.
From Riis Beach walk to the west for about 20 min, you will start to see foot paths between the beach and the Battery. The Batteries are a few hundred feet from the beach. Come early, explore, spend a day at the beach and then join us.
